Lambert McBride was an Aboriginal advocate and lobbyist for Queensland Indigenous rights. Mr McBride believed in the value of education for progress and encouraged Indigenous people to get a good education. To honour his work the Queensland Government established the bursary as part of their celebrations to recognise the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Constitutional referendum.
 
The bursary provides a high-achieving Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander full-time student, a one-off bursary of $5,000 to assist with study-related expenses.

This scholarship has been established by donations made to the Dr Bill Jonas Memorial Indigenous Fund. The fund was established with donations form the Wollotuka Institute, friends, family and community members who wished to honour Dr Bill Jonas' significant contribution to Wollotuka and the University of Newcastle.
 
Dr Jonas, a proud Worimi man, is a pioneer of Indigenous rights. He was the first ever Indigenous Australian to be awarded a PhD and Australia's second ever Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner. The list of his achievements goes on.

The scholarship provides a total benefit of $5,000 over a 1 year tenure provided onging eligibility is met for the term of the scholarship.

The scholarship will be paid in two lump sums of $2,500 follwoing the Semester one and Semester two census dates.
