A new generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders in cancer.

The First Nations Cancer Scholarship Program is funded by the Australian Government through Cancer Australia. Established by the Aurora Education Foundation and Cancer Australia, the First Nations Cancer Scholarship (Scholarship) will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduate students, health professionals, and early-career researchers (ECRs) to undertake full-time postgraduate study (graduate certificate, masters or PhD) or research in a cancer-related field. The purpose of the Scholarship is to support Scholars in building the skills and knowledge required to inform strategies to improve cancer outcomes for Indigenous communities and increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders in cancer-related fields.
 
The Scholarship provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduate students, ECRs and professionals access to funds to support their full-time studies or research at recognised universities or institutes in Australia, the US or UK.
 
Up to four scholarships will be awarded yearly from 2024 to 2026. Administered by Aurora, each scholarship is valued at up to $120, 000 AUD per year, for up to three years. Recipients will also have assess to up to $5,000 AUD per year in tailored academic and wellbeing support. In addition, Aurora will facilitate community and network-building opportunities for individuals and the scholarship cohort.

Roberta Sykes scholars must embody academic excellence and demonstrate a commitment to contributing to improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

 

The value of the Scholarship is up to a maximum amount of AUD $75,000, paid directly to the recipient in equal instalments at the start of each semester or term, subject to academic progress.

The Charlie Perkins Scholarship was launched in 2009 in memory of leader and activist Dr Charlie Perkins. The Charlie Perkins Trust partners with the Aurora Education Foundation to deliver the Charlie Perkins Scholarships to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in undertaking postgraduate study at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. 

 

The purpose of the Charlie Perkins Scholarship is to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have the potential to become leaders in their field and in communities. 

 

Fifteen years ago, there has never been an Indigenous Australian studying full-time at Oxford or Cambridge. Since then, 31 Charlie Perkins Scholars have been accepted into full-time study at these universities. To date, 28 have graduated. You can read more about each Scholar's journeys here.

 

The value of each Charlie Perkins Scholarship will vary, depending on the holder's course of study.

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people keep a strong connection between animals, people and Country, which can be enhanced through research. They often consider animals to be equally as important as humans - and animals can offer physical and spiritual connections between people and the world.

 

Murdoch University's veterinary science research is focused on improving the health and welfare of animals - and their interactions with, and impact on, people and Country. The researchers are crafting solutions to improve animal welfare and productivity, and the conversation of iconic Australian wildlife and ecosystems.

 

Binar is a shooting star, and biddi means path. Together they mean path of the shooting star.

 

This Scholarship pays an annual stipend of $37,000 per year for 3.5 years totalling $129,500 and maintenance funds of $5,000 per year for 3 years totalling $15,000 totalling $15,000.

This scholarship is for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students working, or intending to work in the social and emotional well-being workforce, enrolled in related programs. 
This is worth up to $135,000 for tuition fees, SSAF and financial support.
 
Provided the following for the standard duration of the program, up to a maximum of 8 years:
- tuition fees paid (up to $12,00 per year for undergrad and $31,000 for postgrad by coursework programs);
- student services and amenities fees (SSAF) paid, up to $326 per annum:
- financial assistance of up to $10,000 per annum for full time enrolment or $5,000 per annum for part-time, paid fortnightly.

An ARC funded research scholarship is available with the Mathematics Without Borders research group, within the Mathematical Sciences Institute at the Australian National University. 

The successful applicant/s will undertake research on non-Western and Indigenous mathematical knowledge and its transmission. Some fieldwork and archival work may be involved. 

For a full-time PhD, MPhil, or Masters by Research program the scholarship stipend is $ 38,154 per year, for up to 3.5 years.

 

As appropriate, scholarships also may be offered to undergraduate students to undertake an aligned short research project at Honours level or within a PhB program. The scholarship at postgraduate level may be available to an international student who also qualifies for a Tuition Fee Scholarship.
